The Fossgate Sign erected in April 2018 has been designed in powder coated steel with stainless steel fish to repalce the former fabric banner.
Fish have been chosen because the Foss Bridge was for most of the medieval period York's fish market and is first recorded as such in 1253.
All of the fish chosen for the sign are known from archaeological finds to have been available on this site during the medieval period with fresh water fish on one side and salt water fish on the opposite.
Our clients are the York Civic Trust and the Fossgate Association.
